As director of the roadshow I couldn't be more pleased with the results. There was so much help - I felt so blessed to be working with such amazing leadership, and especially such wonderful youth. As is with any production of any sort, we did have our down moments where we wondered how it was all going to turn out, but the finished product was just exactly-if not better than expected.
The direction I tried to take with this roadshow was to get all of the kids involved and excited. We wanted to write something that the kids could feel like they could relate to and have fun with, which is why we went with such modern movies and music. I wanted the youth to know that this was their roadshow. From what I have seen and heard, each youth was excited about the role they played and the costumes they wore.
All I ever heard from anyone was that they thought ours was the best and for me, that is a million times better than winning. They put in their own little moves, lines and quirks to make it their own, labored over their own backdrops and put in hour after hour of rehearsal, memorizing lines, songs and dance moves. Their efforts made this roadshow what it was. They were all SILVA VALLEY STARS!!!!
Of course, as I mentioned above I had such amazing help in all departments. I had people that weren't in the youth program volunteer to give hours of help and devotion, and I know there is no way that I could have directed this thing without them. When all is said and done, ours truly was the BEST COMEDY, which is the award we won.
We all came out of it with fond memories and stronger friendships and bonds-and I think that is the point of a roadshow. To create unity within a ward program, and to give the youth the opportunity to shine and show their talents. We have such amazing and talented youth. They made me so proud and I feel very blessed and honored to have worked with them on this special project.
Show Recap:
In case you missed the show, our skit was based around the princess Giselle, from the movie Enchanted. She was on a quest to find the man with "The Right Stuff" (which was the theme of the roadshow). With the help of three handmaidens, Giselle travels to meet different suitors in hopes of finding Mr. Right.
She first travels to the Caribbean, where she met Captain Jack Sparrow, his crew and wannabe pirates, Nacho Libre and his sidekick. When she realizes that he is somewhat of a ladies man, she decides that he must not have "The Right Stuff" and moves on to her next suitor.
The next suitor is Indiana Jones who is searching for the Ark of the Covenant in a cave with some of his archeology colleagues. The two hit it off and as he escorts her out of the dangerous cave, Giselle trips on a booby trap that releases a boulder. Indiana exhorts Giselle to jump out of the way, lets go of her hand and hurls himself to safety as Giselle is run over by the boulder. Once recovered, Giselle realizes that a man with "The Right Stuff" would never let her be run over by a boulder and moves on.
After these two unsuccessful attempts, she realizes that she needs some training to get herself prepared for this dream man. She decides to head to Hollywood to get some training from the Charlie’s Angels. Little does she know, Nacho Libre follows close behind as he is trying to find some training so that he can be good enough to be a pirate one day. Giselle attends a work out session with the Charlie’s Angels and feels recharged and ready to set out to her final destination, the land of Mordor.
There she meets Frodo the Hobbit, and his Hobbit friends. She sees that Frodo is brave and kind and decides he must be the man with "The Right Stuff". They decide to marry and Giselle declares the last thing she will need is a ring, and that the one Frodo wears around his neck is perfect for her. Giselle's desire to have Frodo's ring unleashes a dark fury within him and just as he is panicking about Giselle's request, Gollum (from Lord of the Rings) jumps out and steals the "precious" ring from Frodo. Frodo, making his final decision of devotion, chooses to seek after the stolen ring instead of staying with Giselle.
Feeling completely let down and lost, Giselle questions if the man with "The Right Stuff" is out there, when suddenly, she has a thought. Was it the man with the "Right" stuff, she was looking for??? She inquires this question of the Narrator who then informs her that she was not listening well enough and that it wasn't the man with the "Right" stuff she was to be searching for, but the man with the "Tight" stuff. Just then, a spandex clad Nacho Libre appears and the two embrace realizing it has been him Giselle had been searching for. The two then live happily ever after.
